Twitter Users Shame CNN For Not Covering Iran Elections, Riots

CYBERSPACE – Twitter users were posting “#CNNfail” on thousands of tweets Saturday night saying that their coverage of important news like the Iranian elections were downplayed by the cable network.

Here are some of those tweets:

clickmomukhamo: OMG! Major developments in Iran yet CNN isn’t breaking into Larry King who’s interviewing some bikers! #cnnfail

lifeonqueen: CNN is screwing the pooch on this one – top story on web is Six Flags bankruptcy not Iran. Way to miss history CNN #CNNfail

geoffeighinger: RT @Elektracutie They should quit the news and just do travel brochures. #cnnfail

ivanlasso: RT @dabloguiman: COVER IRAN NOW!!!! @CNN @CNNbrk @CNNWORLD #iranelection #CNNFAIL pls RT

Many American Twitter users praised British and other international news outlets for covering the Iranian election aftermath of riots and civil unrest. The “#cnnfail” tag was the third most tweeted topic on the microblogging network Saturday night. The “#iremember” tag and “#Iranelections” tags were first and second respectively.

Throughout the day users on Twitter and Facebook posted updates on civil unrest and police violence going on in Tehran. They shot photos with their cell phones and posted them online where American Twitter users could see them and distribute them.

The Iran government filtered and blocked Facebook and YouTube accounts to stop people from getting the word out on what was happening on the ground. NEWS JUNKIE, The Atlantic Online, and the Daily Kos were the top three online blogs disseminating news on Iran, including the house arrest of Iran’s reform part, Mir Hossein Mousavi. Iranians were also using Tehranbureau to let the outside world know what was happening.

Twitterers were quick on re-tweeting news on Iran and covering what CNN wasn’t. Some of the top stories from CNN today were on Six Flags’ bankruptcy filing, a grandmother in Nevada who was running a meth lab, and the complaints from people about their analog TV disappearing.

Twitter is the second most popular social network in the US after Facebook.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE (3:15 PM, PACIFIC TIME): CNN has been more active at posting stories on Iran since this story blew up on Digg and Reddit. CNN’s front page has video and developing stories on civil unrest in Tehran and other information on Mousavi supporters calling for another election. The voices of people on Twitter were heard.

Um, OK story, but lose the fail whale. Twitter withheld the huge increase in traffic from around the globe. Your image is misleading and inappropriate.

    3. Good post. An image from Iran elections could be better. I posted a slideshow from Flickr in my blog.

I’ve just mailed CNN with a very polite suggestion that they cover the riots, via their handy “news tips” page. Heading to other major news to see if they need such a tipoff as well. This is ridiculous, sickening, pathetic, apathetic, lazy, and has been going on for far too long.

CNN can’t do Iran coverage because this would make Obama look bad. It would open up the question: Why is Obama supporting talks with a Muslim Dictatorship?
CNN does not want to make its idol, Obama, look bad.

um how about you use your brain a little more. how about the fact that iran’s election committee declared the election a fraud and a redo is in order. therefore iran is a DEMOCRACY. CNN wouldn’t want Iran to look like more of a democracy than the US now would they? It seems that Iranians care more about the integrity of their elections than the USA. No, CNN would rather make Iran look like a dictatorship and a country full of terrorists. pffft, your opinions are a perfect example of what the news networks love to manufacture.

      I had to email her.

      Hope email is still online.

This is ridiculous, CNN is running 24hr coverage of the election in Iran. Christiane Amanpour is in Teran right now making live reports…. Your report should include legitimate facts about the realities of what twitterers are commenting on… just because they tweet doesn’t make it true… come on…
